The painterliness of Willem de Kooning and the flat planes of Ad Reinhardt influence my work.
Although considered mutually exclusive I deliberately bring the two together, and combine fast painting with solid blocks of colour. It is this placement which underpins my work as a whole.
I like to paint this way as it means I can bring opposites together and at the same time create layers. Placing blocks of colour over sections of paint can create a facade , and a feeling that if peeled away there could be revealed something hidden underneath.
Therefore working paint in this way owes a lot to the influences of paper cutting and collage as much as it does to the painterliness of abstract expressionism.
