Harriet Maxwell
Biography

Harriet Maxwell specialises in large-scale embroidered portraits. She has recently graduated from Goldsmiths College where she studied Textiles. Whilst studying, her focus shifted from paint to embroidery, using stitch in much the same way as paint, creating marks with the needle as she would with a brush . Rather than simply focussing on the surface, stitch allows her to construct the flesh, building up thread to reference layers of skin, mapping out patterns and contours with the direction of the stitch. This contributes to a rippling effect which produces a slightly distorted, almost sculptural outcome. Depending on the light, this can create an ever-changing portrait, as shadows emphasise and diminish details to show alternative portrayals, just as in life.
