In His Own Words...
One night back in 1985 I was attacked by 3 men in suits who jumped out of a Range Rover and hit me in the face with a bar! It was totally unprovoked.
In 1989 I received £1500.00 from the criminal injuries commission and I spent it hitch-hiking round the United States during the summer of the second year of my degree. I Flew into Toronto then Niagara, Buffalo , Boston , Albany and Syracuse to name a few. I managed to fit in all the big cities - New York , Philadelphia , Washington DC , Miami and The Keys then across to New Orleans , onto the Grand Canyon then to LA. This gave me the opportunity to personally view some of my favourite paintings from the American Abstract Expressionists such as Pollocks, Lavender and Mist in Washington DC .
I loved the States and applied to the Art Institute of Chicago and managed to get onto one of the best courses –there was a fantastic collection of paintings there! Whilst at college I supported myself by working in an office and teaching undergraduate painting one day a week.
I used to go to listen to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, (especially popular American composer Gershwin Copeland). I also went to a lecture by John Cage on experimental music thereby broadening my interest and becoming more aware and appreciative of modern composers such as Frank Zappa, Edgard Varese and later on Mark Anthony Turnage and Pullkis.
I see painting and music as intrinsically the same, a bunch of abstract notes or marks brought together. Music very rarely tries to imitate nature in an obvious way, it is very abstract and I paint abstract paintings.
My influence whilst painting is the music I have blaring at the time, or the subtle notes flowing around the studio. The result can be a cacophony of colour or a mood deeper than the blues. On that note I leave it to you the viewer to decide.
